Hello, I'm David Harper with the BBC News.

A jury in Minneapolis has retired to consider its verdict in the trial of Derek Chauvin, the former US police officer charged with murdering George Floyd. The lead prosecutor argued that Mr. Chauvin intentionally applied unlawful force when he knelt on Mr. Floyd's neck, causing his death. The defense argued that he had correctly followed police training. Barbara Platter-Usher reports.

The judge handed the case of George Floyd's death to the jury after a full day of closing statements. The prosecution argued that Derek Chauvin had to know he was squeezing the life out of Mr. Floyd, who cried repeatedly that he couldn't breathe and finally fell silent with Mr. Chauvin's knee still on his neck. The defense attorney contended that it was a dynamic and fluid situation with Mr. Floyd initially resisting arrest and that Mr. Chauvin did what any reasonable police officer would have deemed necessary. He also contended that his client's actions were not the main cause of death, urging jurors to consider Mr. Floyd drug use and heart problems.

United Nations children's agency says the number of migrant children finding themselves stranded in Mexico has risen 9-fold in the last 3 months. UNICEF said they total nearly 3,500, the majority from Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador and Mexico itself.

The United Nations World Food Program says it will provide daily meals to hundreds of thousands of Venezuelan school children as the country continues to struggle with food shortages. It follows a meeting between the WFP's executive director David Beasley and President Nicolas Maduro. Cat Wiener reports.

The WFP aims eventually to provide a nutritious daily meal to 1.5 million children. The UN agency has been negotiating to address the impact of Venezuela's humanitarian crisis for 2 years. Last year it reiterated the urgency of the situation in a report that found 1/3 of Venezuelans were going hungry. Critics of the government say progress was blocked by President Maduro's insistence on directing aid through networks he controls, including those that deliver food boxes to the poor. A government spokesman said the issue was one of national sovereignty.

The US Secretary of State Antony Blinken says American diplomats will challenge countries that set back efforts to curb climate change. If America fails to lead the world on addressing the climate crisis, we won’t have much of a world left. If we succeed, we will capitalize on the greatest opportunity to create quality jobs in generations; we'll build a more equitable, healthy, and sustainable society; and we'll protect this magnificent planet. The US State Department says the unprecedented global threat from the coronavirus pandemic is causing it to expand its "Do not Travel" alert for Americans to about 80% of the world, only about 15% are at level 4 at present.
