Hello, I'm Debbie Russ with the BBC News.

President Biden has signed a series of executive orders designed to address climate change, which he described as an existential threat. The measures include making climate central to US foreign and national security policy. Mr. Biden said the US must lead the global response to the challenge, having already waited too long. His new climate envoy John Kerry told the BBC that the UN climate change summit in Glasgow later this year would be crucial. It is the last best chance the world has to come together in order to do the things we need to do to avoid the worst consequences of the climate crisis. 3 years ago, we were told we have 12 years to avoid those consequences. Three of those years were lost because we had Donald Trump who didn't believe in any of it. And now, we have 9 years left to try to do what science is telling us we need to do.

The United States has placed a temporary halt on weapons sales to the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia. The State Department said the pause was in order to review contracts agreed by the Trump administration. Here's our security correspondent Frank Gardner. In a move which US officials have described as routine for an incoming administration, billions of dollars of arm sales to Saudi Arabia and the UAE have been temporarily frozen. These include ultra-modern F35 stealth fighters to Abu Dhabi, part of the recently negotiated Abraham Accords and precision-guided munitions to Saudi Arabia. While the Trump administration allowed Saudi Arabia free reign to conduct its air war in neighboring Yemen, providing it with weapons and intelligence, President Biden has made it clear he wants to end US military support for that war.

The UN Agency for Refugees has strongly condemned what it called systematic efforts by European states to prevent migrants from seeking asylum, which is a fundamental human right. Lyse Doucet reports. The UN’s Refugee Agency says the right to seek asylum is under attack. It expressed alarm over a continuous stream of reports that pushbacks were now being carried out in a violent and apparently systematic way. It highlights how boats are being told back, migrants rounded up. The UNHCR called on states to investigate and halt these practices. The UN’s call is echoed by many human rights groups at a time when the pandemic is hardening attitudes towards migration across Europe. UN officials point to Greece, Italy, Malta and Croatia. But the list is growing longer.

Protests have been taking place in cities across Poland after the government said its controversial law introducing a near total ban on abortions would come into force. Terminations will now be allowed in Poland, only in cases of rape or incest, or when the mother's life is in danger.

You're listening to the world news from the BBC.
