Hello, I'm Eileen McKue with the BBC News.

The French President Emmanuel Macron has announced a new national lockdown starting Friday to continue until at least the end of November. Speaking on national television, he said none of the coronavirus measures taken so far had worked in the face of a second wave, whose speed had caught all of Europe by surprise. From Paris, here's Lucy Williamson. After months of local restrictions targeted curfews and partial closures, France's government has embraced a full national lockdown in the hope of getting ahead of a spiraling second wave. Unlike in March, schools will stay open, working from home will again become the rule. Mostly, though, the rules are a grim reminder of the tight restrictions endured here last spring. Social life reduced to a short list of essential outings for food, isolated exercise, medical and social care, accompanied by a document to be completed and signed each time.

The senior US medical official dealing with controlling coronavirus, Anthony Fauci, has criticized President Trump's political rallies in the final stages of the election campaign, saying they are bound to spread COVID-19. He told the BBC that such gatherings of people not wearing masks or socially separating were potentially super spreading events. Historically, over the last months, we've seen that when you have congregation of people not wearing masks, not being separate from each other, crowds, that clearly is the situation that will lead to outbreaks. We've seen that with the motorcycle rally that we had in the northwestern part of a country. We've seen that even in situations such as in the White House.

Six days before the US presidential election, the Democratic Party challenger, Joe Biden, has cast his ballot. Mr. Biden, who is leading in the polls, wore a mask when he voted in his home state of Delaware. President Trump is campaigning in the state of Arizona while Mr. Biden is now in Florida. Both candidates are hammering home their key messages as Lebo Diseko in Washington explains. They've been saying the same thing over and over again, but it's really pushing their key points,Donald Trump saying the country needs to open, repeating the claims that we've rounded the corner, and Joe Biden saying that we need to do more, need to have a plan. Interestingly, the White House Science Office put out a statement yesterday praising Donald Trump as ending the COVID-19 pandemic in the US. There's still around 800 people a day dying from the disease.

The main New York index, the Dow Jones, plunged nearly 3.5 percent, its sharpest one day fall since June. Financial markets have tumbled around the world for a second day this week as concerns grow that arising coronavirus cases will slow any economic recovery.
