Hello, I'm David Harper with the BBC News.

President Trump has refused to acknowledge the role of climate change in the wildfires that are devastating swathe of the western United States. On a visit to California, he blamed poor forest management for the fires. Earlier, the Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden said Mr. Trump's inaction and denial were contributing to ever more powerful natural disasters.

If we have four more years of Trump's climate denial, how many suburbs will be burned in wildfires? How many suburban neighborhoods will have been flooded out? How many suburbs will have been blown away in superstorms? If you give a climate arsonist four more years in the White House, why would anyone be surprised if we have more America blaze?

The mayor of the US city of Rochester has sacked the police chief and suspended two other officials over the suffocation of a black man arrested in March. Mayor Lovely Warren said a new investigation found that the police department's conclusion that officers had followed approved protocols while arresting Daniel Prude was inadequate. Video eventually released by Mr. Prude's family suggested a possible cover-up.

The head of NASA, Jim Bridenstine, has called the discovery of phosphine gas in the acid laden clouds of Venus, the most significant development so far in the search for extraterrestrial life. One of the astronomers involved in the discovery, Emily Drabek-Maunder from Britain's Royal Observatory Greenwich, explained the significance of the findings.

What we've discovered in Venus's atmosphere is phosphine gas, and on a rocky planet like the earth, phosphine is an incredibly rare gas, and it's mainly produced by life that we can find on the earth. So it's what we call a biosignature. It's an indicator of life. So if we can find a gas like this in Venus's atmosphere, that's incredibly exciting because it could mean that it's also being produced by life like it is on the earth. Given the destructive acidity of Venus's atmosphere, scientists say some chemical processes, possibly biological, must be refreshing supplies of the gas. They say any discovery of life on Venus would suggest it is abundant throughout the universe.

The British Parliament has given initial approval to legislation that would give the government powers to override parts of the Brexit withdrawal deal agreed with the European Union. The Internal Market Bill passed its first reading with a comfortable majority, despite the government's admission that it could result in a breach of international law. From Westminster, here's Jessica Parker.

Some people see it as a saber-rattling as the UK engages in future trade talks with the EU. Some even suspect Number 10 of trying to just blow up the talks altogether. Both sides, the EU and the UK insist they want to reach a deal over future cooperation. But with this Internal Market Bill that is proving pretty controversial, moving through the Commons, that is a big cloud hanging over those trade talks, which haven't got long left to run now.
