I have been trying towrite this for a while,

but the morphine

and lack of juicy cheeseburgers

(what has it beennow,

five weeks without realfood?)

have drained myenergy

and interfered withwhatever

prose prowessremains.

Additionally, theintermittent micronaps

that keep whisking meaway

midsentence areclearly

not propelling my workforward

as quickly as I wouldlike.

But they are, admittedly,a bit of trippy fun.

Still, I have to stickwith it,

because I’mfacing a deadline,

in this case, a pressingone.

I need to say this (andsay it right)

while I have yourattention, and a pulse.

I have been married

to the most extraordinaryman for 26 years.

I was planning on atleast another 26 together.

Want to hear a sickjoke?

A husband and wife

walk into the emergencyroom

in the late evening onSept. 5, 2015.

A few hours and testslater,

the doctor clarifies thatthe unusual pain

the wife is feeling onher right side

isn’t theno-biggie appendicitis they suspected

but rather ovariancancer.

No wonder the word

cancer and cancel look sosimilar.

难怪cancer(癌症)这个词和 cancel(取消)

This is when weentered

what I came to think ofas Plan “Be,”

existing only in thepresent.

As for the future,

allow me to introduceyou

to the gentleman of thisarticle,

Jason Brian Rosenthal.

(Plan Be)

(Jason Brian Rosenthal)

He is an easy man to fallin love with.

I did it in one day.

Let me explain: My father’s bestfriend

since summer camp,

“Uncle” John, had known Jason and me

separately our wholelives,

but Jason and I had nevermet.

I went to college outeast

and took my first job inCalifornia.

When I moved back home toChicago,

John — whothought Jason and I

were perfect for eachother

— set usup on a blind date.

It was 1989.

We were only 24.

I had precisely zeroexpectations

about this goinganywhere.

But when he knocked onthe door

of my little framehouse,

I thought, “Uh-oh,

there is something highlylikable

about this person.”

By the end ofdinner,

I knew I wanted to marryhim.

Jason?

He knew a year later.

I have never beenon

Tinder, Bumble oreHarmony,

but I’m goingto create a general profile

for Jason righthere,

based on myexperience

of coexisting in the samehouse

with him for, like, 9,490days.

First, the basics:

He is 5-foot-10,

160 pounds,

with salt-and-pepper hairand hazel eyes.

The following list ofattributes

is in no particularorder

because everything feelsimportant to me

in some way.

He is a sharpdresser.

Our young adult sons,Justin and Miles,

often borrow hisclothes.

(Miles)

Those who know him —

or just happen to glancedown at the gap

between his dress slacksand dress shoes —

know that he has a flairfor fabulous socks.

He is fit and enjoyskeeping in shape.

If our home could speak,

it would add that Jasonis uncannily handy.

On the subject of food —man,

can he cook.

After a long day,

there is no sweeter joy

than seeing him walk inthe door,

plop a grocery bag downon the counter,

and woo me witholives

and some yummycheese

he has procured

before he gets to work onthe evening’s meal.

Jason loves listening tolive music;

it’s ourfavorite thing to do together.

I should also addthat

our 19-year-old daughter,Paris,

would rather go to aconcert with him

than anyone else.

(Paris)

When I was working on myfirst memoir,

I kept circlingsections

my editor wanted me toexpand upon.

She would say,

“I’d like to see more of this character.”

Of course, I would agree —

he was indeed acaptivating character.

But it was funny

because she could havejust said:

“Jason.Let’s add more about Jason.”

He is an absolutelywonderful father.

Ask anyone. See that guyon the corner?

Go ahead and askhim;

he’ll tellyou. Jason is compassionate

— and hecan flip a pancake.

Jason paints.

I love his artwork.

I would call him anartist

except for the lawdegree

that keeps him at hisdowntown office

most days from 9 to 5.

Or at least it did beforeI got sick.

If you’relooking for a dreamy,

let’s-go-for-ittravel companion,

Jason is your man.

He also has an affinityfor tiny things:

taster spoons, littlejars,

a mini-sculpture

of a couple sitting on abench,

which he presented tome

as a reminder of how ourfamily began.

Here is the kind of manJason is:

He showed up

at our first pregnancyultrasound with flowers.

This is a man who,

because he is always upearly,

surprises me every Sundaymorning

by making some kind ofoddball smiley face

out of items near thecoffeepot:

a spoon, a mug, a banana.

This is a man whoemerges

from the minimart or gasstation

and says, “Give meyour palm.”

And, voilà, acolorful gumball appears.

(He knows I loveall the flavors but white.)

My guess

is you know enough abouthim now.

So let’s swiperight.

Wait. Did I mentionthat

he is incrediblyhandsome?

I’m goingto miss looking at that face of his.

I am wrapping this up onValentine’sDay,

and the most genuine,non-vase-oriented gift

I can hope for is

that the right personreads this,

finds Jason,

and another love storybegins.

I’llleave this intentional empty space below

as a way of giving youtwo the fresh start

you deserve.
