Greece's socialist prime minister Alexis Tsipras has been heavily defeated in a snap general election that he has called to try to consolidate his position. He's telephoned his rival Kyriakos Mitsotakis of the center-right New Democracy Party to concede and congratulated him. With well over half of the votes counted, Mr.Mitsotakis appears on course to win the overall majority. He will take office on Monday.

The United States has won the women's football world cup after beating the Netherlands 2:0 in the final in the French city of Leon. The tournament has enjoyed record television audiences and has been heralded as a breakthrough moment for women's sport.

The supreme court in Algeria has ordered the detention of a former head of FLM political party which dominated the country's government for decades. State television said Djamel Ould Abbès was facing allegations that included scrounging public money.

The British foreign secretary Jeremy Hunt has insisted that the leaked comments from the U.K ambassador to Washington that were highly critical of president Trump don't represent view of British government. The ambassador Sir Kim Darroch has described the Trump White House as inept, insecure and incompetent. President Trump said Sir Kim has not severed the U.K well.

Leaked messages attributed to the Brazilian justice minister Sergio Moro suggests he asked a high-profile prosecutor to leak information incriminating Venezuela's socialist government in corruption. The messages were allegedly sent two years ago, when Mr.Moro was still a federal judge.

A South African man who won an opportunity to be the first black African in space has died in a motorbike accident before having a chance to fulfill his dream. After a week of test at the Kennedy space center in Florida, Mandla Maseko was chosen to go into space.
