The lone American adult on the missing Malaysia Airlines plane was an Asia-based International Business Machines Corp. executive described by friends and family as a devout Christian and world traveler.

Philip Wood was working for IBM as a technical storage executive, a job he had just begun which was based in Kuala Lumpur. He previously worked for IBM in Beijing, according to his brother James Wood.

A Vietnamese search-and-rescue plane spotted fragments thought to be from the plane floating in the water Sunday, the first possible clues as to what might have happened to Malaysia Airlines flight MH370, The plane had 227 passengers, including Mr. Wood, and 12 crew members aboard when it departed from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing Saturday.

Mr. Wood had recently been visiting family in the U.S. for a full week, a rarity since he took a job in Asia. Mr. Wood was excited about his new position in Malaysia, said his younger brother James, adding that the trip to Beijing was to be his last one there before getting settled in Kuala Lumpur.

Philip Wood loved to travel, an interest he picked up from the many trips he took around the world with his father, who had also worked at IBM, his brother said. James Wood described Philip as 'a gentle soul,' intelligent and creative.

'I think what everybody wants is closure,' said the younger Mr. Wood. 'We all want to know what happened. Did someone do something bad or was it an accident?'

In a statement, the Wood family said Philip 'was a man of God; a man of honor and integrity.'

'Though our hearts are hurting, we know so many families around the world are affected just as much as us by this terrible tragedy,' it said. 'We ask for your prayers, not only for ourselves, but for all involved during this difficult time.'
