[00:00] PROGRAMME 21

[00:04] Text one

[00:07] Local news

[00:12] Near thing at Ladram

[00:16] A pleasant Sunday outing in the Spring sunshine

[00:22] almost turned to tragedy for two Harpole families at Ladram beach last weekend.

[00:29] The children in the party had pleaded to be allowed to explore an adjacent bay together,

[00:36] and their parents,

[00:40] who were looking forward to a cup of coffee at a nearby caf?

[00:45] had agreed that they could go,

[00:50] provided they promised to be back within an hour.

[00:55] The four children then scampered off along the beach by the foot of the cliffs,

[01:01] clambered over the rocks at the end of the bay,

[01:06] and disappeared from sight

[01:10] around the headland.

[01:14] They failed to notice the time passing,

[01:19] until they realised in dismay

[01:24] that the tide was coming in rapidly,

[01:28] and hurriedly they retraced their steps along the now narrow strip of sand.

[01:35] If they had been a few minutes earlier,

[01:40] they could still have paddled back round the headland,

[01:45] but already the water was too deep for them to pass.

[01:50] Although they tried,

[01:54] they could not climb the steep cliffs either,

[01:59] so the eldest of the four,

[02:03] the only one who could swim,

[02:08] left the others sitting on a rock,

[02:12] holding one another by the hand,

[02:16] while he attempted to swim back and raise the alarm.

[02:22] The boy, 12-year-old Thomas Tailor of Manor Road,

[02:29] Harpole, struggled manfully in the cold water against the strong current,

[02:35] and twenty minutes later

[02:39] he succeeded in rounding the headland.

[02:44] Soon after,

[02:47] he was able to scramble ashore in the next bay.

[02:53] After pausing to regain his breath,

[02:57] he raced to his worried parents

[03:02] and told his story.

[03:06] Luckily

[03:09] they managed to find the owner of a nearby motor boat,

[03:14] and sped off to the rescue.

[03:18] They found the frightened youngsters,

[03:23] still holding one another'shands,

[03:28] with the waves now lapping around their feet.

[03:33] Thomas's mother, Mrs. Beryl Tailor, 37, told the "Observer":

[03:39] Text two

[03:43] Cooperation

[03:47] Can you take me into town on Saturday morning, darling?

[03:52] I want to have my hair done.

[03:57] Yes, I can.

[04:00] I've got to go in anyway.

[04:04] I'm going to have the car serviced.

[04:09] Good.

[04:12] If we left early,

[04:17] I could have my hair dyed and set

[04:21] while you were getting the car done,

[04:26] and then you could pick me up at the hairdresser's afterwards,

[04:31] and we could get the weekend shopping finished together before lunch.

[04:37] That'd be ideal.

[04:41] Then I'd be free to get on with a few jobs in the afternoon.

[04:47] I want to wash the car and paint the garage doors -

[04:52] maybe you could help me.

[04:56] We only had the garage repainted a few months ago;

[05:01] surely it isn't necessary yet?

[05:06] I'm afraid so;

[05:10] the man who did it made a bad job of it.

[05:15] The paint is peeling off already.

[05:19] If I do it myself, I'll know it's been done properly.

[05:25] All right.

[05:29] I'll help you paint the garage doors,

[05:34] if you help me clear out Jamie's room on Friday evening.

[05:40] If we help each other, it'll soon be finished.

[05:45] Fine...

[05:49] You know, I think it would be a good idea to do each other's work for a change.

[05:55] Where's Jamie, by the way?

[05:59] I haven't seen him for an hour.

[06:03] He could be upstairs on his bed reading...

[06:08] If he were a few years older, he could help both of us with our jobs.

[06:15] Yes we could all help one another.

[06:20] You and I could do his French homework,

[06:25] while he washed the car and made the beds.

[06:30] Some hope!

[06:33] Text three

[06:37] Responsibilities

[06:41] I hear your grandchildren and Mrs. Tailor's boys had a narrow escape

at the beach last Sunday, Mrs. Smith.

[06:51] They certainly did.

[06:56] The tide comes into those little bays at Ladram so quickly

[07:02] that it's really toodangerous for small children.

[07:08] They could have been drowned.

[07:12] It just goes to show you.

[07:17] One can't be too carefulwhen children are involved.

[07:23] One has to keep one's eyes on them the whole time.

[07:29] Yes, you wouldn't think that anything like that could happen,

[07:35] but you only have to shut your eyes for a few minutes...

[07:41] When they asked if they could go and explore,

[07:47] we never dreamed it could be dangerous.

[07:52] It was lucky you were able to find that man with the motor-boat, wasn't it?

[07:59] Yes,

[08:02] and it was lucky that young Tommy is such a good swimmer for his age too.

[08:09] Just think!

[08:13] If anything ever happened,

[08:18] one would never be able to forgive oneself.

[08:23] One would have it on one's conscience for the rest of one's life, wouldn't one?

[08:31] Yes, but you can't watch them every single minute of the day whatever you do.

[08:39] But one has to try,

[08:43] if one takes one's responsibilities as a parent seriously,

[08:49] don't you think?
