[00:00] PROGRAMME 19

[00:04] Text one

[00:08] A formal complaint

[00:12] 16 Manor Road,

[00:17] Harpole,

[00:21] Hants.

[00:25] 22nd January

[00:29] The Sales Manager,

[00:34] Sparks Electrical Suppliers Ltd.,

[00:40] 13 South Street,

[00:44] Southampton.

[00:48] Dear Sir,

[00:52] On Tuesday you sent one of your fitters

to install the dish-washing machine we purchased from your company recently.

[01:01] Although you had assured us that we would not have to pay extra for installation,

[01:09] your workman told us that we had to have a new tap

[01:15] and various electrical fittings before he could connect the machine up.

[01:21] Naturally we had to take his word for it,

[01:27] and we told him to carry out the necessary work.

[01:33] The bill he presented us with afterwards seemed exorbitant,

[01:39] so we went through it

[01:43] and checked the prices of the items.

[01:48] We found that elsewhere the identical articles were little more than half the price he had charged us.

[01:57] Moreover, we have since discovered that we need not have had a new tap at all.

[02:05] We trust, therefore, that at your earliest convenience you will send another man

to exchange the new tap for the old one again.

[02:15] We also hope that, after examining the enclosed bill carefully,

[02:22] you will see fit to reduce the prices considerably,

[02:28] as well as to deduct the price of the new tap.

[02:33] Yours faithfully, Mrs. C. Jones

[02:39] Text two

[02:43] Garages

[02:47] Did you take your car to Greenham's garage to be repaired, Bill?

[02:53] Yes, the day before yesterday.

[02:57] It's in good shape again now.

[03:02] Apparently, I needn't have worried about that terrible rattling noise underneath.

[03:09] It was only a loose wire and they fixed it in two minutes flat.

[03:16] Was there anything else wrong?

[03:20] Oh, yes.

[03:24] They found about a dozen other things that needed replacing.

[03:30] That's always the way.

[03:34] You take the car in for one reason

[03:39] and they find that everything else is wrong.

[03:44] In the end you pay twice as much as you bargained for.

[03:50] But at least Greenham's people are fast workers.

[03:55] Yes, thank goodness!

[03:59] We had to go to Birmingham yesterday

[04:04] and I thought I'd have to hire a car or borrow someone else's,

[04:10] but my own car was ready in time, so I didn't need to hire one after all.

[04:17] Of course, Greenham may be fast, but he's expensive too.

[04:23] I didn't have to go to him, of course.

[04:27] I think I'll try somewhere else next time something goes wrong.

[04:33] It doesn't matter where else you try.

[04:39] All garages are expensive these days.

[04:44] You just have to pay up.

[04:49] There's nothing else you can do.

[04:53] And sometimes you can't even be sure that they've done the job you've asked them to do.

[05:00] Last year

[05:03] I had to take my car into a garage in Brighton for an emergency repair,

[05:10] and I wasn't even allowed to stand in the repair shop and watch while they did it.

[05:17] Union rules or something.

[05:21] Well, they probably didn't want you to see how simple the job was before they gave you the bill.

[05:30] Text three

[05:34] A flying visit

[05:38] Hello, Mike.

[05:42] Did you enjoy the weekend in Paris?

[05:47] Yes, it was great, Mum.

[05:51] Look, I've brought you back some wine,

[05:55] and here are some cigarettes for Dad.

[06:00] Thank you, dear.

[06:04] That's lovely.

[06:08] But you needn't have gone to that expense.

[06:13] Well, I don't often buy you presents,

[06:18] but I don't often go to Paris either.

[06:23] Tell me about it.

[06:27] What did you do with yourself?

[06:31] Well, we had quite a good flight,

[06:36] and we got to the hotel at about seven o'clock.

[06:41] We had a super dinner,

[06:45] and then Clive,Tim and I went to a night-club.

[06:50] Didn't anyone else go with you?

[06:55] No, no one else wanted to come.

[06:59] All the others were too tired.

[07:04] Then on Saturday morning we did some shopping,

[07:09] and of course we watched the international rugby match in the afternoon.

[07:14] The match was drawn,

[07:18] but England were lucky not to lose.

[07:23] Where else did you go?

[07:27] Didn't you look round the Louvre?

[07:31] Yes, but it was a lightning visit.

[07:36] And we went up the Eiffel Tower too, of course.

[07:41] But we didn't have time for much else.

[07:46] We were told we were not to be late for check-in at the airport

[07:52] and we had to rush like mad.

[07:56] When we got there, though,

[08:00] we found we needn't have hurried

[08:04] because take-off had beendelayed for an hour.

[08:09] What else did you buy then?

[08:14] Let me see. ...

[08:17] A few souvenirs,

[08:22] some postcards,

[08:26] a bottle of perfume for Janet. ...

[08:31] Nothing much else because I ran out of money.

[08:36] By the way,

[08:39] can you lend me a couple of pounds until next week, Mum?

[08:45] So that's the price of my French wine, is it?
