[00:00] PROGRAMME 17

[00:04] Text one

[00:07] Bedtime story

[00:11] Are you ready, David?

[00:15] Right:

[00:19] The Lost Coin.

[00:23] "One afternoon just before Christmas

[00:28] an oldgentleman was wandering through the city centre.

[00:34] The gaily-illuminated shops were packed with good things

[00:40] and crowded with cheerful shoppers.

[00:45] The children were gazing in wonder

[00:50] at all the toys on display in the windows,

[00:55] and the old man was surveying the happy scene indulgently.

[01:01] Suddenly in the middle of the throng

[01:06] he spotted a dirty little boy sitting on the pavement,

[01:13] weeping bitterly.

[01:17] When the kind old man asked him why he was crying,

[01:22] the little boy told him that he had lost a tenpenny piece

[01:28] that his uncle had given him.

[01:32] Thrusting his hand into his pocket,

[01:37] the old man pulled out a handful of coins.

[01:42] He picked out a shiny, new tenpenny piece

[01:48] and handed it to the child.

[01:52] "Thank you very much," said the little boy,

[01:57] and, drying his eyes, he cheered up at once.

[02:03] "An hour or so later

[02:07] the old man was making his way back home

[02:12] by the same route.

[02:16] To his astonishment

[02:20] he saw the same dirty little boy

[02:25] in precisely the same spot,

[02:30] crying just as bitterly as before.

[02:34] He went up to the boy

[02:38] and asked him if he had lost the tenpence he had given him as well.

[02:44] The little boy told him that actually he had not lost the second coin,

[02:50] but he still could not find his first tenpence.

[02:56] "If I could find my own tenpence," he said tearfully,

[03:02] "I'd have twenty pence now"

[03:06] Did you like that? ...

[03:10] Janet, he's asleep!

[03:14] Text two

[03:18] Christmaspreparations

[03:23] I'm nearly ready for Christmas now.

[03:27] I've sent off all my Christmas cards except one,

[03:33] and I've bought all my presents apart from yours.

[03:38] Have you sent out the invitations to our party yet?

[03:43] Not yet.

[03:47] I'll send them out tomorrow.

[03:51] Just look at the list again to make sure we haven't forgotten anyone.

[03:57] We're inviting just about everybody in the street,

[04:02] except for the Jones family.

[04:07] It seems a bit rude, but to tell the truth I can't stand that woman.

[04:13] Well, she's so ill-mannered.

[04:18] Last time she came here she left without saying a word.

[04:24] And apart from that she tells such lies about us.

[04:30] She never stops running us down to the neighbours.

[04:36] That's settled then.

[04:39] We won't invite them.

[04:43] By the way I met Pat O'Dowd last night

[04:49] and he told me he'd be leaving for Ireland next week.

[04:54] He said he was sorry he would miss our party

[04:59] but he might see us at the Rushtons' New Year party.

[05:04] What a pity!

[05:08] He's so lively at parties...

[05:13] Oh, I saw some gorgeous Christmas trees on sale in the High Street

[05:20] but I didn't have time to ask how much they were.

[05:25] I'm sure they're much too expensive.

[05:30] Well, we've got to have a tree.

[05:34] If you don't want to buy one, you'll have to go out and dig one up.

[05:40] Oh, and we need a few gifts for the tree.

[05:46] Apart from the holly and the mistletoe

[05:50] that's about everything.

[05:55] It's the same every year -

[05:59] you end up with everything you want and I end up with a headache

from worrying about my bank balance.

[06:07] Text three

[06:11] A good sell

[06:15] What do you think of my new pullover, Ted?

[06:20] Well, it's very nice as far as I can see, but put iton first,

[06:27] then I'll tell you if it suits you.

[06:31] I tried on about twenty.

[06:36] This one isn't what I wanted really.

[06:41] Why did you buy it then?

[06:45] The salesman sold it to me before I realised what had happened.

[06:52] He just never stopped talking

[06:57] and he told me some story about the latest fashion and special reductions.

[07:05] Before I could say anything he'd wrapped it up and taken my money.

[07:12] Well, it doesn't look too bad,

[07:16] but haven't you put it on inside out and back to front?

[07:23] Really?

[07:27] Well, I can't tell the back from the front with these high-neck pullovers.

[07:34] I really wanted one with a V-neck.

[07:39] It's a good thing it's got sleeves at the top

[07:44] oryou'd put it on upside down as well.

[07:49] Still, I think it suits you quite well.

[07:55] I went out to get a blue pullover with a V-neck,

[08:01] short sleeves and a pattern,

[08:06] and I came home with a brown one

[08:10] with a high neck, long sleeves and no pattern.

[08:16] You must be too easy to take in.

[08:21] You've got tolearn to stand up to these high-pressure salesmen.

[08:27] They'll sell you all sorts of things you don't want if you don't watch out.

[08:33] Next time I'll send my wife.

[08:38] She'll probably sell something to the salesman.
