[00:00] PROGRAMME 16

[00:03] Text one

[00:07] English games:

[00:11] Squash

[00:15] Squash

[00:18] is another of those peculiarly English ball games.

[00:24] It was once confined to Britain and her colonies

[00:29] and played almost exclusively by members of the upper classes,

[00:35] but it must now be one of the world's fastest-growing sports,

[00:41] for the number of participants has increased three or four fold in the last few years,

[00:48] and new courts are springing up inalmost every corner of the world.

[00:54] The court consists of a square room in which twoplayers,

[01:00] equipped with rackets

[01:05] similar in shape to tennis rackets,

[01:09] have to strike a small rubber ball.

[01:14] When a player strikes the ball,

[01:18] it may rebound from any of the four walls,

[01:23] but it must strike the front wall of the room

[01:28] before it touches the ground.

[01:32] His opponent then has to hit the ball in his turn.

[01:38] The ball must not bounce on the floor more than once before each player hits it;

[01:44] if a player fails to return the ball to the front wall

[01:50] or to hit the ball before it bounces twice,

[01:55] he loses the point.

[01:59] One advantage of the game is that,

[02:03] since the court is covered,

[02:07] you don't have to rely on the weather.

[02:12] Moreover

[02:15] you needn't be a great athlete

[02:19] and it isn't necessary to possess exceptional coordination

[02:25] to play the game competently.

[02:29] At top level players have to be extremely fit and talented,

[02:35] but the average person can get good exercise and enjoy himself thoroughly

[02:42] even at his first attempt.

[02:46] Text two

[02:50] Weight problem

[02:54] Did you have a good game, Gerry?

[02:58] Splendid, but I'm dead beat now.

[03:03] I've got to sit down and have a rest, a cigarette and a drink.

[03:09] How long have you been playing?

[03:13] Only about 40 minutes, but I'm all in.

[03:18] That's what I like about squash.

[03:23] You get more exercise in half an hour

[03:28] than you get in two hours from any other sport,

[03:33] and you enjoy yourself in the process.

[03:37] Of course I don't play myself now...

[03:42] I must be losing weight.

[03:46] I've played three times this week and I reckon I've sweated off a couple of pounds each time.

[03:53] Yes, but how many beers do you have after the game?

[03:59] I always find I'm so thirsty after playing golf

[04:05] that I've got to drink two or three pints -

[04:09] and then I put on all the weight I lost during the round.

[04:14] I suppose you're right.

[04:19] My waistline isn't getting any better.

[04:23] I'm only kidding myself really.

[04:28] Who did you play with?

[04:32] That chap Ted Sykes.

[04:36] And I managed to beat him for the first time.

[04:41] Did you?

[04:45] You must be improving.

[04:49] They say he's good enough for the club second team.

[04:54] Do they?

[04:57] Perhaps there's a chance for me then.

[05:02] Have another beer on me.

[05:06] You haven't got to go yet, have you?

[05:10] Well, I can't stay long.

[05:15] We're having dinner withsome friends tonight,

[05:19] and Gertie will be wild if I'm late.

[05:24] Still, there's no need to rush;

[05:29] I'll have one more.

[05:33] Good!

[05:36] Text three

[05:40] Orders

[05:44] Do you think I can borrow the car tonight, Mum?

[05:49] No, you can't.

[05:53] Your father and I will be using it.

[05:57] We're going to the annual general meeting at the bridge club.

[06:03] But they aren't holding meeting tonight.

[06:08] Aren't they?

[06:11] How do you know?

[06:15] I heard Dad telling Mr. Jones it had been postponed for a month.

[06:21] Well, he didn't mention it to me.

[06:26] If that's the case you can use the car,

[06:31] but you're not to cram it with toomany of your friends again.

[06:37] There must have been eight or nine of you in it last week.

[06:42] You'll spoil the upholstery, and besides it's against the law.

[06:48] Well Pete's car had broken down,

[06:53] so ours was the only one available.

[06:58] Anyway there are only seven of us this week.

[07:03] That car's only meant to take five people.

[07:08] You are not to go far in it,

[07:13] or you'll break the springs.

[07:17] We're only going to a party at Topsham.

[07:22] I'll driveslowly and gently.

[07:27] Another of those parties!

[07:32] You're to be home at midnight,

[07:36] or your father and I will be worried to death that you've had a crash.

[07:42] Mum, the party will hardly have started by midnight.

[07:48] Just go to sleep and forget about me.

[07:53] If you're late in, you are not to make a noise...

[07:58] And you're not to drink any alcohol

[08:03] or the police will stop you and you'll lose your licence.

[08:08] For god's sake, Mum,

[08:12] you must think I'm 9 years old, not 19!
