[00:00] PROGRAMME 13

[00:04] Text one

[00:07] The comparison game

[00:12] Letters to the Editor

[00:16] Sir:

[00:19] Society has always been competitive,

[00:25] but in this century

[00:29] life is perhaps more competitive than in any previous era.

[00:35] We are taught, almost from birth,

[00:40] to compare ourselves in mind and body

[00:45] with the people around us.

[00:49] Even as children

[00:53] we are already intent on showing that we are not merely different from ourfellows

[01:00] but in some way superior to them.

[01:05] School life is an eternal competition;

[01:11] every day each child tries to prove that he is more intelligent than the next child,

[01:19] and every term marks are added up to find the best

[01:25] as well as the worst child in the class.

[01:30] On the sports field the process continues;

[01:35] the child nowstrives to demonstrate

[01:40] that he is faster, stronger or more skilful than his classmates.

[01:48] Our jobs, our possessions and even the areas inwhich we live

[01:54] become a matter of competition.

[01:59] We make out that our jobs and possessions are somehow better

[02:05] or more desirable than other people's,

[02:10] and we claim that our country, town or village is the best,

the biggest, the most friendly or the most civilised in the world.

[02:21] Are we interested in proving our superiority -

[02:26] or is it that we take a sadistic delight

[02:32] in proving that some poor fellow being

[02:38] is inferior to us?

[02:42] "Concerned", Tunbridge Wells

[02:47] Text two

[02:51] More gossip

[02:55] Hello, Mrs. Smith.

[02:59] Any news?

[03:03] Nothing much.

[03:07] It's been so cold that I haven't been outside for a week.

[03:13] I do hate the cold.

[03:18] Yes, it's best to stay indoors in such beastly weather.

[03:25] You noticed that the new people have arrived at number thirty-five though, surely.

[03:32] Yes, I did notice that.

[03:37] But I haven't met them yet.

[03:42] I called on them yesterday.

[03:46] They seemed such nice people at first -

[03:52] but now I'm not so sure.

[03:56] Really?

[04:00] Why?

[04:04] Well,

[04:07] they're from London,

[04:12] and they think it'sthe only place in the world worth talking about.

[04:18] The wife made some very catty remarks about this area.

[04:24] Londoners always think they're better than other people,

[04:31] but I always find them less cultured.

[04:36] What does she look like?

[04:40] Quite young and pretty,

[04:45] but she does wear a lot of make-up,

[04:49] and she certainly dyes her hair.

[04:55] Perhaps she isn't as young as she looks.

[05:00] Anyway I don't want to mix with people like that.

[05:06] I knew they would be snobs when I saw that huge car.

[05:13] Surely they don't need such a big one.

[05:18] No... still,

[05:23] my husband says it's four years old

[05:29] and it probably cost less than ours second-hand;

[05:35] and ours is certainly as fast as theirs.

[05:41] My husband would never buy a car like that.

[05:47] It uses so much petrol you can hardly afford to run it.

[05:53] But surely

[05:57] your car is four years old too, Mrs. Jones.

[06:04] Our car is the newest of the three.

[06:10] It certainly isn't.

[06:14] Ours is the same age as yours...

[06:20] Text three

[06:24] A new competition

[06:28] I'm fed up with studying and exams.

[06:33] I've a good mind to give up everything,

[06:37] become a drop-out and join a hippie group somewhere.

[06:43] That's not a bad idea.

[06:47] I'm sick of work myself.

[06:51] We could forget about the cost of living, the price of houses,

[06:57] keeping up with the neighbours and all the rest of it.

[07:02] Shall we go and live on the beach at St. Ives?

[07:07] Can't we look for a warmer climate?

[07:12] Anyway I'd like to go further away than that.

[07:17] Well, it does get a bit cold and damp in St. Ives.

[07:22] Let's hitch-hike across Europe

[07:27] and find some lovely lonely island in the farthest corner of the Mediterranean.

[07:34] We can start our own hippie colony there.

[07:39] Great idea!

[07:43] We'll create a society with no exams

[07:48] and with no competitions to see who can make the most money

[07:54] and build the most luxurious house

[07:59] and drive around in the most expensive car.

[08:04] Yes... We'll start a new competition to see who can live with the least money,

[08:10] the fewest possessions and the smallest house.

[08:16] You can't get away from competitions of some sort, can you, John?
