[00:00] PROGRAMME 12

[00:03] Text one

[00:07] Topic:

[00:11] North sea oil

[00:15] As the summer draws to a close,

[00:20] the oil companies remain optimistic

about the prospects of oil flowing ashore from new rigs in their North Sea fields

[00:29] before their target dates next autumn.

[00:34] Assuming no unexpected snags arise,

[00:39] they will accomplish their aim.

[00:43] They have settled disputes and strikes among the men

[00:49] and overcome various technical and political problems;

[00:54] but recently

[00:58] the elements have caused the worst hold-ups.

[01:03] Abnormally high seas and howling gales

[01:09] have prevented engineers from lifting essential heavy equipment into position

[01:16] on the production platforms erected off the Scottish coast.

[01:22] If this spell of exceptional weather continues throughout the autumn,

[01:28] it will be necessary to stop work until next spring,

[01:33] for the oilmen know from experience

[01:38] that major operations are impossible in the winter months

[01:44] owing to the stormy seas.

[01:48] They are confident, however,

[01:52] that they will achieve their object,

[01:56] provided the weather breaks for just one day

[02:02] during the next few weeks.

[02:06] The British Government is also eager

[02:11] for the timely completion of these operations.

[02:17] Britain's economic position will deteriorate, many think,

[02:23] unless revenue from the oil

[02:27] rescues her from her continuing balance of payments problems.

[02:34] Text two

[02:38] A lonely job

[02:42] Wherever have you been, Patrick?

[02:46] I haven't seen you for months.

[02:51] Someone said you'd emigrated.

[02:55] Whoever told you that?

[03:00] I've been working on a weather research station on the Isle of Collett.

[03:05] Where on earth is that?

[03:10] It's a lump of rock about 100 miles north-west of Ireland.

[03:16] Whatever did you do to pass the time?

[03:21] Fortunately I had my university thesis to work on.

[03:27] If I hadn't had a pile of work to do,

[03:32] I'd have gone off my head.

[03:36] Was there anything else to do?

[03:40] Well,

[03:44] if you were a bird watcher,

[03:48] it would be a paradise;

[03:52] but whenever I got tired of studying,

[03:57] I could only walk round the island -

[04:01] and that took me less than twenty minutes.

[04:06] How ever did you stand it?

[04:10] If I'd been in yourshoes

[04:15] I'd have taken the first boat back to civilisation.

[04:21] Well, I needed some information from my research there,

[04:27] and they paid me,

[04:30] so I saved some money.

[04:34] Now I can have a short holiday before I start looking for a job.

[04:40] Have you finished your Ph.D. already?

[04:45] I thought you had another year to do.

[04:50] No, time flies, you know.

[04:55] As long as they don't reject my thesis,

[04:59] I'll be leaving for London next week.

[05:04] If I were you, I'd go off to the Mediterranean or somewhere before starting work.

[05:11] No thanks, I'll stay in London.

[05:16] I've had enough of the sea for a while.

[05:21] Text three

[05:24] Loyal fans

[05:29] Hello, Bill.

[05:32] Are you ready yet?

[05:36] Oh, come in, Ted.

[05:40] Is it two o'clock already?

[05:45] I haven't finished my lunch yet,

[05:49] but I won't be long.

[05:53] We'll miss the kick-off unless you hurry.

[05:58] Take a seat for a minute.

[06:03] If we miss the kick-off it won't really be a tragedy, will it?

[06:09] I don't suppose the game will be worth watching anyway.

[06:15] Probably not.

[06:19] But I bet if we arrive five minutes late

[06:25] they'll score the only goal of the game before we get there.

[06:31] And if we arrived early, they wouldn't score any goals at all.

[06:37] I don't know why we persist in going to watch them every other Saturday.

[06:45] We wouldn't know what to do if we didn't go, would we?

[06:50] They're bound to lose again, unless there's a miracle.

[06:56] I don't know.

[07:00] They've dropped old Ford

[07:05] and picked that youngster, Wade, in his place.

[07:10] Perhaps they'll win, if they strike form.

[07:15] If they strike their usual form, they'll lose five-nil against this team.

[07:23] They've already lost at home twice this season...

[07:28] But let's get a move on,

[07:32] we'll be late.
