[00:00] PROGRAMME 10

[00:04] Text one

[00:07] Get well soon

[00:11] 21, Stuart Road, Portsmouth.

[00:17] 9th September

[00:21] Dear Antie Ivy,

[00:25] We were very sorry to hear that you are back in hospital again,

[00:31] but I feel sure you'll be out and aboutagain soon.

[00:36] It doesn't sound very serious this time according to Uncle Tom,

[00:42] and in any case you always recover from operations so quickly.

[00:48] We hope you'll come and stay with us for a while as soon as you feel well enough to travel.

[00:55] Robin started school last week,

[00:59] and I'm just getting accustomed to having some time to myself during the day

while Trevor's at work and Robin's at school.

[01:08] The house seems very quiet and peacefulwithout Robin.

[01:14] Luckily he doesn't object to going to school;

[01:19] on the contrary he appears very happy there.

[01:24] In the morning a neighbour takes him to school,

[01:29] together with her own little boy,

[01:33] and I go to the school to meet them and bring them home again.

[01:39] If we lived a little nearer, we would come to the hospital to see you,

[01:45] but anyway you know we'll be praying for you.

[01:50] Trevor sends his love

[01:54] and wishes you a speedy recovery.

[01:59] We are all looking forward to hearing from you

[02:04] and seeing you soon.

[02:08] Lots of love, Susan

[02:12] Text two

[02:16] Service, please

[02:20] Mum, I'm in a terrible hurry.

[02:25] Can I have my lunch right away?

[02:29] We're going to Shaldon for a game of golf.

[02:34] The boys are picking me up at one o'clock,

[02:38] and I've promised to be ready on time.

[02:43] Gosh, it's twenty to one already!

[02:47] Is that clock right?

[02:51] No, it's ten minutes fast.

[02:57] It's not quite half past twelve yet.

[03:02] But it doesn't make any difference -

[03:07] I've just put our lunch in the oven

[03:12] and it won't be ready for more than half an hour.

[03:17] Mmm! It smells marvellous!

[03:22] Is it ham and egg pie?

[03:26] I can't wait for that now though.

[03:30] Put some by for me and I'll have it this evening.

[03:35] What can I have straight away?

[03:39] I'm starving.

[03:43] I can make you a mushroom omelette in five minutes

[03:49] or you can have what's left of this pork pie.

[03:54] It looks a bit stale, though -

[03:59] try a bit first.

[04:03] It doesn't taste too bad.

[04:07] I'll have this with some cheese and tomatoes.

[04:12] It's not much of a lunch

[04:15] but at least I'll be ready in time.

[04:20] I'm used to your racing in and out and expecting a meal within five minutes,

[04:26] but this is not a restaurant with a 24 hour service

[04:33] and I'm not a magician.

[04:37] You just have to take pot luck, if you can't make your arrangements in advance

[04:44] and give me some warning of your movements.

[04:49] Well, it's a rotten restaurant

[04:53] and I'm going to complain to the manager.

[04:58] If I die of food poisoning, they'll put you in prison for years.

[05:03] Text three

[05:07] The season of change

[05:11] Good evening, Mrs. Jones.

[05:16] It's become quite chilly all of a sudden, hasn't it?

[05:22] Yes, I think the summer is over at last

[05:27] and winter's on the way.

[05:32] The nights are certainly drawing in.

[05:37] It gets dark soon after tea-time now.

[05:42] I suppose we'll be lighting the fires again in a few weeks.

[05:49] I'm really looking forward to sitting by a blazing coal fire again.

[05:56] I don't mind the winter nights as long as the house is cosy and warm,

[06:03] and I adore the crisp, fresh autumn air.

[06:08] So do I.

[06:13] I much prefer autumn and winter to summer.

[06:18] I can't stand the heat.

[06:23] Do you remember that heat-wave we had in July?

[06:29] It got so hot that I couldn't go to sleep at night

[06:35] and the milk turned sour before you could put it in the fridge.

[06:40] I used to love the summer,

[06:45] but now I'm growing older I like it less and less.

[06:50] Well, we're all getting older;

[06:55] there's no doubt about that.

[07:00] The summers seem to flash past faster and faster every year.

[07:07] Have you noticed the old oak trees in the lane?

[07:12] The leaves have turned yellow already.

[07:17] They look quite beautiful.

[07:22] When the leaves change colour,

[07:27] everyone says how beautiful they look.

[07:32] My hair was yellow once and now it's going grey,

[07:39] but no one says it looks beautiful any more.

[07:44] Never mind, Mrs. Smith.

[07:49] The trees will be losing their leaves in a few weeks.

[07:54] At least you aren't going bald.
