[00:04]Text one

[00:08]Blunders

[00:11]English Homework James Fielding Professor Bumble

[00:18] Professor Bumble is not only absentminded

[00:24]butshort-sighted as well.

[00:28]His mind is always busy with learned thoughts

[00:34]and he seldom noticed what is going or around him.

[00:39]One fine day recently

[00:43]he went for a stroll in the countryside,

[00:48]but, as always he had a book in his hand,

[00:53]and he had no sooner set out for his walk

[00:58]that he became engrossed in reading.

[01:03]He hadn't gone far when he blumped into a massive cow

[01:09]and fell down.

[01:13]He had lost his spectacles in the fall,

[01:17]and he though the had slumbled over a fat lady.

[01:23]"I bed your pardon, madam",

[01:27]he said politely

[01:31]before searching for his glasses.

[01:35]As soon as he had put them on,

[01:39]he realised his mistake.

[01:44]Soon he was concentrating on his book again

[01:49]and paying no attention to anything else.

[01:55]He had scarcely been walking for five minutes

[02:00]when he fell over again,

[02:04]losing both his book and his glasses.

[02:09]This time he became furious

[02:15]seising hisumbrella,

[02:19]he struck the "cow" in anger.

[02:23]Then, after feinding his glasses,

[02:28]he realised with horror

[02:32]that he had made a second blunder.

[02:37]A large fat woman was fleeing from him in terror.

[02:42]Text two

[02:46]Loyal fans

[02:50]What did you think of the game, Bill?

[02:55]Dreadful!

[02:59]It was neither exciting nor skilful.

[03:04]I agree with you.

[03:08]Of course the weather didn't help.

[03:12]They'd hardly kicked off when it started to pelt with rain.

[03:18]Our teamare useless in the mud,

[03:23]and they were off form anyway.

[03:27]Some of our team can't play football in either wet or dry conditions,

[03:35]and I've never seen them on form.

[03:40]I can't help laughing when I watch old Ford.

[03:46]Every time he gets the ball he either falls over or passes it to the opposition.

[03:53]I can't make out why they pick him.

[03:58]He's too old really.

[04:03]He'd already been playing in the team for about ten years when I became a supporter -

[04:10]and that was eight years ago.

[04:14]Evans isn't much better.

[04:19]He's not only too slow,

[04:24]he's scared to tackle as well.

[04:29]Yes,

[04:33]he's always afraid of getting injured.

[04:37]Neither Ford nor Evans is up to it.

[04:43]We need two new defenders

[04:48]and a new forward too.

[04:52]But the management is too mean to spend money either or new players

[05:00]or on improving the ground.

[05:05]Yes, that's true.

[05:09]The pitch is a disgrace.

[05:14]It isn't flat and the drains don't work.

[05:19]Every time it rains

[05:23]the pitch is covered with great puddles of water.

[05:28]What we need, Ted, is not only new players

[05:35]but a new manager and a new pitch as well.

[05:41]Then perhaps we could win promotion to the Third Division.

[05:47]Text three

[05:51]Linguistic talent

[05:55]Why weren't you at the German class last night,Joan?

[06:01]Have you given up?

[06:05]Well, no...

[06:09]I came back late yesterday

[06:13]and found Simon asleep in the chair.

[06:18]He'd been writing reports all day long

[06:24]and he was too worn out to go out again,

[06:29]so we gave the lesson a miss.

[06:34]You've missed quite a lot of lessons lately, haven't you?

[06:39]Are you losing your enthusiasm?

[06:43]Yes, I'm afraid so.

[06:48]Neither Simon nor I have a gift for languages.

[06:54]People just laugh at us when we attempt to speak German.

[07:00]How did you and Eric pick it up so quickly and easily?

[07:06]You've hardly been in Germany a month.

[07:11]It was neither quick nor easy, I assure you.

[07:16]We'dboth studied the language before we came,

and we only needed to brush it up a bit.

[07:24]Anyway, all our friends here speak English fluently

[07:30]so we don't really need to learn German.

[07:35]Well, Eric and I have been both learning and teaching languages for years

and we enjoy it immensely.

[07:44]Well, keep it up!

[07:48]I'm all for teaching foreigners English,

[07:53]if it saves me the trouble of learning foreign languages myself.
