[00:00]PROGRAMME 8

[00:03]Text one

[00:07]A matter of habit

[00:11]I never used to go anywhere without the car.

[00:17]I regarded it as an essential part of myself.

[00:22]But when the price of petrol doubled in one year,

[00:28]I resolved not to use the car except when absolutely necessary.

[00:35]For example,

[00:39]I always used to take the car when I went to fetch the papers on Sunday mornings,

[00:46]although our newsagent's is only 10 minutes' walk away;

[00:52]now I go on foot.

[00:56]I tell myself

[01:00]that I'm not only economising on petrol

[01:06]but keeping fit at the sametime.

[01:10]It's all a question of habit really.

[01:15]I'm sure you can get used to anything if you try

[01:20]and I already feel that I rely on the car less than I used to.

[01:27]Besides, now that we live in the suburbs,

[01:32]I can walk down the road and catch a bus to the office

or to any other part of the town.

[01:40]We used to live in the country about 15 miles from town

[01:46]and then I wouldfrequently drive to and fro twice in one day.

[01:53]That meant I would use 15 gallons of petrol and more in a week;

[02:00]now I need half that amount.

[02:05]The trouble is

[02:09]that I am also getting used to the petrol prices.

[02:14]They don't seem so very high to me any more.

[02:19]Perhaps it's easier to get accustomed to expensive petrol

[02:25]than it is to doing without the car.

[02:30]Text two

[02:34]A helpful neighbour

[02:38]I've just brought your ladder back, Mr. Fielding.

[02:43]Thanks for lending it to me.

[02:47]Where shall I leave it?

[02:51]Just lean it against the wall there.

[02:56]How are yousettling down in the new house?

[03:00]Oh, fine, thanks.

[03:04]All the neighbours have been very kind.

[03:09]We think we'll be very happy here.

[03:13]I'm sure you'll soon feel at home.

[03:18]Use the ladder again any time.

[03:22]Thanks...

[03:26]Do you mind if I borrow one of your drills?

[03:31]There are all my drills.

[03:35]Which one do you want?

[03:39]Any one will do.

[03:42]I only want to drill some holes in the wall to put up some shelves.

[03:48]Well, take the electric one.

[03:52]It bores holes through anything.

[03:57]How does it work?

[04:00]I don't want to ruin it.

[04:05]It's child's play.

[04:09]Anyone can use it.

[04:12]You just plug it in and press this switch;

[04:18]release the switch and it stops again.

[04:22]I'll need some long screws as well.

[04:27]They're out of stock at Smith's hardware stores.

[04:32]Do you know where I can buy some?

[04:36]Try Thorne's in Paul Street;

[04:41]you can usually find anything you want there...

[04:45]Hang on a minute though;

[04:49]I've got lots of screws in that tin there.

[04:54]Help yourself if there are any the right size.

[04:59]That's very generous of you, Mr. Fielding.

[05:04]Thank you very much.

[05:08]You're welcome, Mr. Williams.

[05:12]Always glad to oblige a neighbour.

[05:16]Text three

[05:20]The commuter

[05:24]How are things, Ron?

[05:28]Not bad, Jane.

[05:32]I'm involved in too many problems and it's a long working day,

but I'm used to that, so it doesn't bother me too much.

[05:40]How do you like commuting to London every day?

[05:45]Don't you find it a strain?

[05:49]It was ghastly at first -

[05:54] especially getting up before dawn to catch that 6.30 train.

[06:01]But it's bearable now that I'm used to it.

[06:05]Don't you think it's an awful waste of time?

[06:10]I couldn't bear to spend three hours sitting in a train every day.

[06:17]I used to feel the same as you, but now I quite enjoy it.

[06:23]How do you pass the time?

[06:27]In the morning I just sit in comfort and read the papers to catch up with the news;

[06:34]on the way home at night I relax with a good book, or have a nap,

or chat with friends or even have a game of bridge.

[06:44]I suppose you know lots of people on the train now.

[06:50]Yes, I bump into someone I know on the platform every day.

[06:56]Last week I came across a couple of old school friends

[07:02]and we spent the entire journey in the bar.

[07:07]It sounds like a good club.

[07:12]You never know,

[07:15]I may join it!
