[00:00] PROGRAMME 4

[00:04] Text one

[00:07] Work and play

[00:12] ...tell you about my two sons as you asked in your last letter.

[00:18] Malcolm has been working very hard all this year,

[00:23] because he is sitting some examinations this month

[00:28] and he is determined to win a scholarship to study History at the University of Oxford.

[00:34] Although the sun has been shining all day today,

[00:39] he has been sitting at home reading about the history of the French Revolution.

[00:45] Fortunately he adores books,

[00:50] especially history books,

[00:54] and he isn't interested in games.

[00:59] In any case he hasn't enough time for sport,

[01:04] as he spends all his time and money on books.

[01:09] His younger brother James is totally different.

[01:14] He is bored with school and studying,

[01:19] buthe is very keen on games.

[01:23] He loathes books,

[01:28] especially the books they oblige him to read at school.

[01:33] He never stays indoors when the weather is reasonably fine,

[01:38] and today he has been playing tennis for hours with his friends.

[01:44] He is fond of football,

[01:48] but tennis is his favourite sport

[01:53] and, although he is only 16,

[01:57] he is the school champion

[02:01] and he has already won several tournaments.

[02:06] When he is old enough,

[02:10] he hopes to become a professional player,

[02:14] so he spends a lot of time practising and trying to improve his game.

[02:21] His mother doesn't really approve.

[02:25] Ann has been busy lately making some...

[02:30] Text two

[02:34] Career prospects

[02:38] How have your two sons been doing at school lately, Andy?

[02:44] Terrible!

[02:47] James never starts working, and Malcolm never stops working.

[02:54] You're joking, of course.

[02:58] I hear that Malcolm is likely to win all the prizes in the exams this year.

[03:05] Yes, so his teachers say.

[03:09] But he deserves to do well.

[03:13] He's always been so conscientious and hard-working,

[03:18] and he's been slaving at his books every evening for months on end recently.

[03:24] He wants to go to Oxford University next year.

[03:29] Maybe he'll become a university lecturer himself eventually.

[03:35] Maybe.

[03:38] But I think he studies too hard;

[03:43] I sometimes wish he'd go out and enjoy himself for a change.

[03:48] Yes...

[03:52] What about the younger one?

[03:56] Well, James' teachers say that he has ability,

[04:01] but that he's too inconsistent

[04:06] and that he rarely does his best.

[04:10] In other words,

[04:14] he's not bad when he makes an effort, but he's too idle.

[04:20] He couldn't care less about exams.

[04:24] He does his homework in ten minutes every evening and then rushes out to play tennis.

[04:30] He's crazy about tennis, isn't he?

[04:35] Perhaps he can make his fortune at it.

[04:40] You can make more money from sport than from an old-fashioned profession these days.

[04:46] So I believe.

[04:50] But my wife always worriesabout the children's future.

[04:55] She wants James to give up tennis and study law,

[05:01] but I don't believe in forcing boys to take up careers they're not cut out for.

[05:07] I wonder how James'll develop in a couple of years' time!

[05:12] Text three

[05:16] After the exams

[05:21] What did you think of the exams, Pete?

[05:25] I reckon they were dead easy.

[05:29] Maybe they were easy enough for you

[05:34] but they were much too hard for me.

[05:39] Oh, come on.

[05:43] You've probably done better than you think.

[05:47] No, I'm dead certain I've failed in Latin,

[05:53] and most likely in French and History too.

[05:58] Thank goodness it's all over though.

[06:02] We can forget about it now -

[06:07] at least until the results come out.

[06:11] Yes.

[06:15] Now I can get on with reading all books I've been wanting to read for months,

[06:21] but haven't had time for.

[06:25] What!..

[06:29] Well, it's up to you, I suppose,

[06:33] but I've had enough of reading;

[06:37] I'm not going to open another book for months.

[06:42] Don't you think we all deserve a break?

[06:47] Well, yes...

[06:51] I'll take a day or two off perhaps.

[06:55] And I think I'll come to Bob's sister's partytomorrownight.

[07:01] But if I'm going to university in October,

[07:06] I'll have to get down to some serious work again pretty soon.

[07:12] I've got to get through the A level exams first.

[07:17] I'll worry about university if and when I ever get there.

[07:23] That's the trouble with you.

[07:27] You always try to do everything at the last minute.

[07:33] And you're too serious;

[07:37] that's your trouble.

[07:41] You never stop swotting.

[07:45] Well, I like reading.

[07:49] And I can't stand it.

[07:53] I don't know why I decided to try to go to university in the first place.

[08:00] I think I'll run away and join the army or something.
