[00:00] PROGRAMME 3

[00:03] Text one

[00:07] A road accident

[00:11] It was raining heavily as I was walking up the hill towards the station

at six o'clock on a Saturday morning.

[00:20] At this early hour there wasn't much traffic

[00:25] and there weren't many people in sight.

[00:29] Just as I was crossing the road near the top of the hill,

[00:35] a car came round the corner.

[00:40] It was travelling very fast

[00:44] and the driver was obviously having difficulty in controlling it.

[00:50] Suddenly it swerved violently,

[00:55] skidded on the wet road,

[00:59] hit a lamp-post and turned over.

[01:04] At once I ran to the car to assist the driver,

[01:10] buthe was unconscious

[01:14] and there was a lot of blood on his face.

[01:18] A young woman hurried into the station and phoned for an ambulance

[01:24] while I took care of the driver.

[01:29] A number of other people gathered round the car,

[01:34] but there wasn't a great deal we could do.

[01:39] A policeman arrived a few minutes later

[01:44] and asked me a lot of questions about the accident.

[01:49] Shortly afterwards the man came round, and he was groaning quietly

when the ambulance arrived at high speed and rushed him away to hospital.

[01:59] On Monday morning I went to the hospital to enquire about the man.

[02:05] They told me that his injuries were not serious after all

[02:11] and that he was rapidly getting over the effects of the accident.

[02:16] Text two

[02:20] A little gossip

[02:24] Good morning, Mrs. Smith.

[02:29] What beautiful weather again!

[02:33] Yes, lovely!

[02:38] What a splendid summer we've had so far this year!

[02:44] Yes, but some people are complaining about the heat

[02:50] and grumbling because we haven't had much rain for the gardens.

[02:56] Some people are never satisfied.

[03:02] By the way,

[03:05] have you heard that young Patrick Ellis has had another accident in his car?

[03:12] How awful!

[03:17] Is he badly hurt?

[03:21] Well, they took him to hospital

[03:27] but I don't think it was serious because he's coming home again today.

[03:33] I suppose he was driving flat out again.

[03:39] Onlyyesterday I was telling Mrs. Tailor how madly he drives.

[03:47] And all his friends are just the same.

[03:52] I know.

[03:56] What wild things young men are these days! Mm...

[04:03] I've got some news for you, too.

[04:08] Have you heard that Eva Browning is getting married for the third time on September the tenth?

[04:17] Fancy that!

[04:22] She only got her second divorce in the spring.

[04:28] What a dreadful woman she is!

[04:33] Her first marriage only lasted six months -

[04:39] and that was only in 1972, wasn't it?

[04:45] Yes, that's right.

[04:50] At this rate she'll lose countof her husbands before she's forty.

[04:57] She may lose count, Mrs. Jones

[05:03] but we certainly won't.

[05:08] Text three

[05:11] A few errands

[05:15] I'm just going down to the shops to buy some cigarettes, Gertie.

[05:21] Do you want anything while I'm there?

[05:25] Yes, what a good idea!

[05:30] There are a lot of things I need, as a matter of fact.

[05:35] Let me see...

[05:39] We haven't got many eggs left, so bring a dozen large ones.

[05:45] And there isn't much cooking-fat in the jar, so bring a pound of lard.

[05:52] And... Hold on!

[05:55] If you want me to get a lot of things, write them down on a piece of paper,

[06:01] or I'll forget something.

[06:05] All right.

[06:09] But wait a minute, while I look in the other cupboard to see what we need.

[06:14] Hurry up, then!

[06:18] I want to call in for a chat with Gerry on the way back.

[06:23] We've got plenty of cocoa, but we've nearly run out of coffee and there isn't great deal of tea left;

[06:31] bring a large tin of instant and a quarter pound of tea.

[06:38] Oh! And I want some ham.

[06:42] How much?

[06:46] Half a pound will do.

[06:50] We're short of vegetables, too;

[06:54] bring some beans, and a tin of carrots...

[06:59] I only wanted to go out for a stroll and a chat.

[07:05] I'll need a lorry to bring all that home.

[07:10] Here's the list.

[07:13] Oh, and you can pick up my coat at the dry-cleaner's while you're passing.

[07:20] And do me a favour while you're at Gerry's:

[07:24] ask Pam if she's free on Thursday morning.

[07:30] We're having a meeting at ten o'clock about the tennis-club dance in August.

[07:37] Do you mind if I have half an a hour to myself after I've done all your business for you?
