[00:00] Intermediate English

[00:04] PROGRAMME 1

[00:07] Text one

[00:11] Topic:

[00:15] A quiet life

[00:19] Felix Catt is a typical resident of Siberia Avenue, Surbiton.

[00:26] He looks gloomy,

[00:30] but in fact he is quite happy,

[00:35] and he leads a quiet life in this suburb of London.

[00:41] His wife Gertie looks after him carefully;

[00:46] she cleans the house regularly,

[00:51] and feeds him daily on well cooked meat and tinned vegetables.

[00:58] There is always a supply of fresh water for his whisky,

[01:03] and plenty of carpet space for putting practice,

[01:09] so he is very comfortable and content with suburban life.

[01:15] Felix is very fond of his old dog, Sam.

[01:21] They go for walks together on Sundays.

[01:26] Today he is taking Sam to the local vet,

[01:31] because he is afraid that he is going blind.

[01:36] However, the vet is confident of curing him by means of a small operation.

[01:43] He is giving Sam an injection before operating on him,

[01:48] so that he will sleep peacefully the whole time and not feel any pain.

[01:55] There is even a pretty nurse standing by to comfort Sam in case he feels unhappy

and lonely in the strange surroundings.

[02:04] In general,

[02:08] both Felix and Sam

[02:12] think that they don't have a bad life,

[02:17] and they have no desire to change it for anything more adventurous.

[02:23] Text two

[02:27] A date for the theatre

[02:31] Hello, Jack.

[02:35] Why the rush?

[02:39] Where are you going?

[02:43] Hello, Mike.

[02:46] I'm on my way to meet Joyce at the station.

[02:51] We're having dinner at a Chinese restaurant

[02:56] and then we're off to the theatre.

[03:00] Do you often go to the theatre?

[03:04] Yes,

[03:08] Joyce and I usually go at least once a fortnight;

[03:13] sometimes more.

[03:17] Do you ever go?

[03:20] Yes,

[03:24] but I don't often find time these days.

[03:29] There are so many other things to do.

[03:33] True, true.

[03:37] Listen,

[03:40] perhaps Janet and I can arrange to meet you and Joyce one Saturday evening.

[03:46] We can have dinner together

[03:50] and go on to a theatre.

[03:54] That's a good idea.

[03:58] Look,

[04:02] I forget the name of the play, but there's a good comedy on at the Theatre Royal next week.

[04:08] If you like, I can book four seats for next Saturday.

[04:14] All right.

[04:17] I'm meeting Janet later this evening

[04:22] so I can make sure that she's free next Saturday.

[04:27] I'll ring you tomorrow to confirm if we are coming.

[04:32] Fine.

[04:35] I must fly now.

[04:39] It's six o'clock already and Joyce's bus arrives at ten past.

[04:45] She hates waiting around

[04:49] and I don't want to spoil everything by upsetting her before we start our evening.

[04:55] I'll phone you tomorrow then.

[05:00] Give my regards to Joyce.

[05:04] Have a good evening.

[05:07] Text three

[05:11] A picnic

[05:15] Exeter 78563.

[05:20] Tim?

[05:23] This is Mary.

[05:27] I hope I haven't woken you up.

[05:31] Actually I got up ten minutes ago,

[05:36] but it's only a quarter to nine.

[05:41] Why are you calling me so early on a Sunday morning?

[05:46] Because the sun's shining and there isn't a cloud in the sky,

[05:53] and Alan and I are going for a picnic.

[05:57] Do you want to come?

[06:01] It's true we haven't seen the sun lately,

[06:06] but I expect it'll rain again soon.

[06:11] No, it won't.

[06:15] Well I've got some work to do, but I suppose I could put it off till tomorrow.

[06:23] Where are you thinking of going?

[06:27] Well, there's lovely spot by the river on the road to Tiverton.

[06:34] There's a big bend in the road

[06:38] just before you get to Stoke.

[06:43] You leave your car

[06:47] and walk across a field to the left.

[06:52] There are some tall elm trees by the river,

[06:57] and that's where we'll be.

[07:01] It's very easy to find the place.

[07:05] Yes, I think I know where you mean.

[07:10] I'll come,

[07:14] and I might even go for a swim.

[07:18] Are you taking any food or drink?

[07:23] It's a pity you didn't mention it yesterday;

[07:27] I don't think there's any beer in the house.

[07:32] Don't worry.

[07:36] We've got some bottles of beer and lemonade

[07:41] and there's half a chicken in the fridge.

[07:45] Right then.

[07:49] See you there in about an hour.
