Investigators Hopes Dim On Finding Black Boxes

French air-accident investigators downplayed hopes of finding the 'black boxes' from Air France flight 447, which crashed in the Atlantic Ocean early Monday morning en route from Rio de Janeiro to Paris.

The units, which digitally record flight-data and cockpit conversations, could be crucial in determining why the Airbus A330 fell from the sky with 228 people onboard after flying through storms and turbulence.

'I am not optimistic' about finding the recorders,' Paul-Louis Arslanian, director of France's Bureau d'Enquetes et d'Analyses, or BEA, told a press conference outside Paris Wednesday. 'The sea [bed] is not only deep but mountainous,' Arslanian said. He added that a black box is not always necessary to establish the cause of a crash.

Brazilian military officials said Tuesday that search teams had found debris strewn over five kilometers that almost certainly came from the plane. It is floating on the Atlantic about 650 kilometers northeast of Fernando de Noronha, an Atlantic island near where Flight 447 made its last radio contact.

Investigators will now try to determine where the two-engine plane hit the water, and where its wreckage is on the sea bed. Brazilian Defense Minister Nelson Jobim said the ocean could be 3,000 meters deep in the region, which would complicate salvage operations.

Airplanes occasionally crash into water but rarely in mid-ocean, where the uncharted bottom is dark and can be treacherous even for unmanned diving equipment.

Without the flight recorders, investigators could have difficulty determining why the plane crashed. Passengers, airlines, regulators and Airbus itself urgently want to know if the jetliner plunged because of a one-time event, fundamental design flaws, terrorism or something else. Airbus is a unit of European Aeronautic Defense & Space Co. (EADSY).

Adding to the urgency is the recorders' limited ability to signal their location. The units have beacons that can be detected from many thousands of meters away, according to their manufacturer, Honeywell International Inc. (HON), although Arslanian said the range could be only 1000 meters. They also have only enough battery power to last around 30 days. If searchers can't pick up the signals before the batteries die, the boxes will probably never be found.
