我们用一般过去时表示过去发生的而现在已经结束的事件，动作或情况。我们总要说明（或暗示）动作是在何时（when）发生的，因此经常用表示时间的词，如：yesterday,ago,last summer.



-描述最近或很久以前发生的动作：

Sam phoned a moment ago.(不是*Sam has phoned*)

The Goths invaded Rome in A.D.410.(不是*The Goths had invaded*)

-描述过去的习惯：I smoked forty cigarettes a day till i gave up.



如果我们不用时间词语（a moment ago, when i was young 等）我们便暗示出来:

I saw Fred in town.(i.e. when i was there this morning)

I never met my gradfather.(i.e. perhaps he died before i was born)
