Lesson 96 The dead return

First listen and then answer the question.

What happens to the lanterns at the end of the festival?

A Festival for the Dead is held once a year in Japan. This festival is a cheerful occasion, for on this day, the dead are said to return to their homes and they are welcomed by the living. As they are expected to be hungry after their long journey, food is laid out for them. Specially-made lanterns are hung outside each house to help the dead to find their way. All night long, people dance and sing. In the early morning, the food that had been laid out for the dead is thrown into a river or into the sea as it is considered unlucky for anyone living to eat it. In towns that are near the sea, the tiny lanterns which had been hung in the streets the night before, are placed into the water when the festival is over. Thousands of lanterns slowly drift out to sea guiding the dead on their return journey to the other world. This is a moving spectacle, for crowds of people stand on the shore watching the lanterns drifting away until they can be seen no more.

festival  ['festəvəl]   n. 节日

lantern   ['læntən]   n.

spectacle  ['spektəkl]  n.

1、A Festival for the Dead is held once a year in Japan.

2、This festival is a cheerful occasion, for on this day, the dead are said to return to their homes and they are welcomed by the living.

be said to do 与 It is said that…

It is said that …

the dead are said

3、As they are expected to be hungry after their long journey, food is laid out for them.

Just as he laid out his book, the telephone rang.

Don't lay out your clothes on the bed. Put them away.

4、Specially-made lanterns are hung outside each house to help the dead to find their way.

find one’s way 表示“找到路”,而 find one’s way out 意思为“寻找到解决问题的办法”

a tree-lined street 林阴街道

5、All night long, people dance and sing.

It snowed all day long.

She stayed with her grandfather all summer long.

6、In the early morning, the food that had been laid out for the dead is thrown into a river or into the sea as it is considered unlucky for anyone living to eat it.

本句主语为 food is thrown into a river or into the sea, that 引导的定语从句修饰先行词 food ,后面的as 引导的表示原因状语从句。

Please consider my suggestion.

We have to consider where to go for our holidays.

We are considering going to Canada next summer.

We consider him the best man for the job.

Do you consider it wise to go there by yourself?

7、In towns that are near the sea, the tiny lanterns which had been hung in the streets the night before, are placed into the water when the festival is over.

the tiny lanterns are placed into the water 为主句which 引导的定语从句,when 引导时间状语从句

place 在这里作动词“放置”place an advertisement in the newspaper在报纸上登广告

8、Thousands of lanterns slowly drift out to sea guiding the dead on their return journey to the other world.

the next world / the world to come 来世
She believes that she will meet her dead parents in the other world.

drift vi.

Thousands of lanterns slowly drift out to sea.

The boat drifted gently across the water.

He has lost his job and just drifts in the city all day long.

He drifted from France to Italy.

guide vt.

领路:

The old man guided the explorers through the forest.

These lanterns will guide the dead on their return journey to the other world.

We should be always guided by truth.

Don't let your wife's opinion guide your actions.

9、This is a moving spectacle, for crowds of people stand on the shore watching the lanterns drifting away until they can be seen no more.

I've just read a moving story / letter.
