Why did the policeman ask the writer to come to the police station?

It must have been about two in the morning when I returned home. I tried to wake up my wife by ringing the doorbell, but she was fast asleep, so I got a ladder from the shed in the garden, put it against the wall, and began climbing towards the bedroom window. I was almost there when a sarcastic voice below said, 'I don't think the windows need cleaning at this time of the night.' I looked down and nearly fell off the ladder when I saw a policeman. I immediately regretted answering in the way I did, but I said, 'I enjoy cleaning windows at night.'

'So do I,' answered the policeman in the same tone. 'Excuse my interrupting you. I hate to interrupt a man when he's busy working, but would you mind coming with me to the station?'

'Well, I'd prefer to stay here,' I said. 'You see. I've forgotten my key.'

'Your what?' he called.

'My key,' I shouted.

Fortunately, the shouting woke up my wife who opened the window just as the policeman had started to climb towards me.

“我也是的，”警察用同样的声调回答，“请原谅我打断了您。当一个人在忙着干活时，我是不愿意去打断他的，但请您跟我到警察局去一趟好吗？”

“可我更愿意呆在这儿，”我说，“您瞧，我忘带钥匙了。”

“什么？”他大声问。

“钥匙！”我喊道。

幸运得很，这喊声惊醒了我的妻子。就在警察开始向我爬上来时，她打开了窗子。

Asking fro trouble 是现在分词短语

ask for trouble，自找麻烦，自讨苦吃（多用于口语）。＝ don’t ask for trouble

make trouble惹事

take the trouble to do sth费神做某事

get in trouble惹上麻烦

have trouble with sb. 与某人产生纠纷

You shouldn't have been so rude to her. You are asking for trouble.

你不该对她那么粗鲁。你这是自找麻烦。

The boss seems to be annoyed. To talk to him now is to ask for trouble.

老板似乎在生气。现在找他谈话是自讨苦吃。

有些动词如think，believe，expect，suppose等后接表示否定意思的宾语从句时，通常在主句中使用否定形式(否定转移)，但译成汉语时否定意义仍在宾语从句中。

I don’t believe he is still in London.

need表示“需要”时，后面接动名词有被动的含义。

need cleaning = need to be cleaned

The classroom needs cleaning.

4、 I looked down and nearly fell off the ladder when I saw a policeman.

Fall off the ladder从梯子上掉下来=fall down the ladder

5、 I immediately regretted answering in the way I did, but I said, 'I enjoy cleaning windows at night.'

I regretted saying it almost at once.regret doing sth.后悔做了某事(已经做了)regret to do sth.很遗憾要做某事（还没做，将要去做）remember to do sth是记得去做某事remember doing sth是记得做过某事

forget to do sth.是指忘了去做准备去做的事;

forget doing sth.是指这件事做过了,但是忘记了

stop doing sth停止做某事

stop to do sth 停下来做某事

6、'So do I,' answered the policeman in the same tone. 'Excuse my interrupting you. I hate to interrupt a man when he's busy working, but would you mind coming with me to the station?'

前面句子提到一种情况，后面也有同样情况，可用so(肯定)或者neither(否定)开头，后面句子用倒装。

So do I.（倒装）和 So I do.意思完全不同。前者是我也如此。后者是我的确如此。

Mike likes to help others, and so he does.

用于并列补充句和反应句的 so与 neither／nor

so和 neither／nor 用于并列补充句和表示反应的句子时表示“也”、“同样”， so 用于肯定句，neither ／nor 用于否定句（neither 和 nor完全可以互换）。它们后面跟的是省略形式的分句，只有助动词+ 主语，也可以是情态助动词 +主语：

You shouldn't work so hard and nor should I.

你不应该如此用功，我也不应该。（重复情态助动词should）

I've got a new car and so has John.

我买了一辆新车，约翰也买了一辆。（重复助动词 have）

excuse sb. For doing sth 原谅某人做某事＝excuse one’s doing sth.

Be busy doing sth忙于做某事

Hate to do sth hate doing sth

Would you mind doing sth ，你介意做某事吗？是你去做

Would you mind my opening the window? 你介意我开窗吗？是我去做

7、 'Well, I'd prefer to stay here,' I said. 'You see. I've forgotten my key.'

prefer to do sth+rather than (to) do sth. Would rather do sth. than do sth.

更愿意做某事

I prefer to go to the movies rather than (to ) stay home.

I prefer going to the movies to staying home.
