Lesson 50 Taken for a ride

First listen and then answer the question.

Why did the writer not get off the bus at Woodford Green?

I love travelling in the country, but I don't like losing my way.

I went on an excursion recently, but my trip took me longer than I expected.

'I'm going to Woodford Green,' I said to the conductor as I got on the bus, 'but I don't know where it is.'

'I'll tell you where to get off.' answered the conductor.

I sat in the front of the bus to get a good view of the countryside. After some time, the bus stopped. Looking round, I realized with a shock that I was the only passenger left on the bus.

'You'll have to get off here,' the conductor said. 'This is as far as we go.'

'Is this Woodford Green?' I asked.

'Oh dear,' said the conductor suddenly. 'I forgot to put you off.'

'It doesn't matter,' I said. 'I'll get off here.'

'We're going back now,' said the conductor.

'Well, in that case, I prefer to stay on the bus,' I answered.

ride  [raid]  n. 旅行

excursion  [iksˈkə:ʃən]  n. 远足

conductor  [kənˈdʌktə]  n. 售票员

view   [vju:]   n.

Further notes on the text

1.I went on an excursion recently, but my trip took me longer than I expected.

I'll go on holiday next month.

Did you go on a trip last month?

It took me half an hour to walk to the station/to repair the bicycle.

2.I'll tell you where to get off.

(1)where to get off是一个“连接副词+不定式短语”结构,其中的连接副词通常为疑问副词。

在tell, show, know, decide, teach, learn, wonder,

Did Mary tell you when to come?

Do you know how to open the box?

He didn't tell me where to put those books.

No one got on/ off(the bus)at the last bus stop.

3.I sat in the front of the bus to get a good view of the countryside.

(1)in the front of表示“在(某一事物的)前部”:

I don't like to sit in the front of a car.

There is a ship in the front of the photo.

in front of则表示“在……

He stopped his car in front of a school.

(2)不定式短语to get…

4.This is as far as we go.

as far as表示“到……

As far as I know, they haven't returned from abroad.

This is as far as I can help you.

5.I forgot to put you off.

They put me off at a small station.

6.Well, in that case, I prefer to stay on the bus.

(2)in that/this case

Is he one of your best friends? In that/this case, you may invite him.

Grammar in use

在第26课的语法中,我们讲到有些表示状态和感觉的动词通常用于一般现在时而不用于进行时,如:appear, appreciate, believe, feel, forget, hear, know, like, look, notice, remember, resemble, see, think, understand。 这些动词包括belong to, consist of, contain, desire, detest, dislike, hate, hope, love, matter, mean, mind, need, want, wish等。

The car belongs to Dan.

I need a new hat.

Word study

1.lose, loose与miss

Roy has lost his job again.

Try not to lose your ticket.

A large sum of money has been lost.

She lost her parents when she was sixteen.

The handle of this suitcase is very/ has come loose.

Hurry or you'll miss the train.

I missed my English lesson.

The Turners left the district last year and we really miss them.

2.expect与wait for

I expect/ I'm expecting to hear from you.

I'm expecting the bus to arrive in the next ten minutes.

I'm waiting for the next bus.

I'll wait for you outside the post office.
