Dong Yuhui, former senior partner at East Buy, a subsidiary of Chinese private tutoring giant New Oriental where Dong once worked as a teacher, drew attention on Friday after apologizing for multiple grammar mistakes while speaking English.



11月10日，有网友发视频，在11月8日-9日的疯狂英语线下活动中，创始人李阳表示：“昨天我听了董宇辉的演讲，跟国外的外交官交流，几乎每一句话都有严重的语法错误，而且发音特别怪，所以证明新东方不怎么样，俞敏洪发音更差，所以学口语唯有疯狂英语。这段话一定要发到网上，引起洪天巨浪，轩然大波，我就喜欢轩然大波。”

The controversy arose on Monday when a netizen posted a video showing Li Yang, founder of Crazy English, criticizing Dong's English during an offline event held over the weekend. Li said that almost every sentence contained grammar mistakes and unusual pronunciation, claiming this proved New Oriental was weak and that the only way to learn spoken English was with Crazy English. He added that he wanted the remark to attract attention.

视频显示，董宇辉当时说的其中一句英文是，“Every children learn poems of Tang Dynasty when we in junior high or senior high.”

这句话随即被指出存在多处语法问题，包括主语搭配不当、动词形式错误、介词使用不自然以及缺少 be 动词等。例如，“every children”应为 “every child”，“learn”应改为 “learns”，而 “when we in junior high” 应改为 “when they are in junior high”。

更自然的表达应为：“Every child learns poems from the Tang Dynasty when they are in junior high or senior high school.”

11月8日，董宇辉曾在与辉同行评论区表示，“抱歉，英语丢得太久，说的时候来不及反应，口语中有多个语法错误，大家多提批评意见。”

Dong responded on Saturday in the comment section of his "Time with Yuhui" livestream, apologizing for the mistakes and explaining that his English has become rusty, which made him unable to react in time while speaking.



对此，不少网友纷纷表态。有网友称“语言能交流，听得懂就好，又不是搞学术。”

忘羡别来无恙：我也不管发音怪不怪，只要能交流就行了，非得和外国人发音一样吗？他们没有口音吗？

锅盖头司令：如果是还在教英语，那语法错了确实不应该，毕竟你要教别人应对考试之类。但如果自己实际使用中错了，也无伤大雅吧，毕竟只是交流工具，对方听懂就行。

铅医蔷薇：英语对大多数人来说，就是个工具，能看懂资料，能和老外交流，目的就达到了。

也有人觉得曾是英语老师的人，不应该频繁出错。

The incident drew mixed reactions online. Some remarked that language is primarily a tool for communication and mistakes are acceptable as long as others can still understand. Other users argued that as a former English teacher and public figure, Dong should maintain higher standards. Some saw Li Yang's critique as constructive, while others accused him of seeking attention.
