Despite entering as the betting underdog at UFC 312, Zhang Weili looked like the best fighter in 115-pound history on Saturday in a dominant defense of her women's strawweight title.
After getting a feel for Suarez’s wrestling in the opening round, Zhang completely took over, shutting down repeated takedown attempts and battering the former Olympic hopeful both on the feet and on the ground.
It was a stunning performance from the strawweight queen as Zhang dispatched arguably her toughest challenge to date—Suarez, a fighter many had pegged as a future champion since joining the UFC roster.
“I had a full camp for this fight. I’m well prepared for this fight,” Zhang said about shutting down Suarez’s wrestling. “I respect Tatiana. Tatiana is very strong. I’m the underdog, it’s OK. I just focus on myself.”
