[00:00.16]If you walk into a clothing store,
[00:03.52]you are likely to be hit
[00:05.64]with an explosion of the color pink.
[00:10.76]The pink wave has been fueled
[00:13.24]by the release last month
[00:16.00]of the wildly successful film Barbie.
[00:20.84]The movie is based on the popular doll
[00:24.48]of the same name,
[00:26.12]made by the toy company Mattel.
[00:30.52]Barbie dolls are known for their bright pink color.
[00:35.84]And clothes based on what the toy wears
[00:40.12]have become hugely popular.
[00:44.04]People are calling them Barbiecore outfits.
[00:49.28]Barbie clothing items include shoes, backpacks,
[00:53.92]swimsuits and even special clothes for dogs.
[00:58.96]"There is not a corner of the globe
[01:02.60]that hasn't turned pink," said Richard Dickson,
[01:07.84]Mattel's president and chief operating officer.
[01:13.12]The pink wave actually began last year,
[01:17.12]but Barbie strengthened it.
[01:20.64]High-end designer Valentino
[01:23.92]kicked off the pink wave by dressing models
[01:28.16]in head-to-toe in a pink color called fuchsia
[01:33.48]for a runway show in March of 2022.
[01:39.36]A few months later,
[01:41.28]photos showed Barbie movie star Margot Robbie
[01:46.20]on set in a hot pink Western outfit.
[01:51.40]The look got a lot of attention online,
[01:55.08]said Madeline Hirsh.
[01:58.16]She is news director for the fashion magazine InStyle.
[02:04.40]Around the same time, more and more people
[02:08.44]were returning to their workplaces
[02:11.36]and doing more social things
[02:14.04]as COVID-19 restrictions eased.
[02:18.92]Hirsch said, "People were craving joy,
[02:22.52]color and new clothes to wear out again…"
[02:27.20]The style took off.
[02:29.20]Fashion magazines published pictures of famous stars,
[02:34.04]including Kim Kardashian
[02:36.72]and Harry Styles, in bright Barbie-inspired clothes.
[02:43.28]Barbie is one of Mattel's top three brands.
[02:48.24]The toymaker trademarked the word Barbiecore in 2022.
[02:54.88]It also partnered with companies
[02:57.68]such as high-end French designer Balmain,
[03:01.44]Kendra Scott, and Barefoot Dreams.
[03:05.72]Those efforts went into full force in 2023,
[03:10.68]with more than 100 partnerships tied to the movie.
[03:16.56]Mattel has also worked on many products outside of fashion,
[03:21.76]such as an Instagram-perfect pool float
[03:25.32]from Funboy and a pink Microsoft X-box
[03:30.08]gaming device in a Barbie Dreamhouse.
[03:34.68]There are even Barbie-centric foods.
[03:37.68]They include an ice cream flavor
[03:40.48]and a Barbie Burger with pink sauce
[03:43.76]sold at Burger King fast food restaurants in Brazil.
