Shanxi province has announced plans to phase out the practice of housing undergraduates in 8-bed dormitories. This initiative aims to address the ongoing issue of the supply-demand imbalance in college student housing.
The province is striving to significantly expand student dormitory space within a three-year timeframe and to substantially ease the accommodation constraints within five years.
Guangdong province on Oct 21 also issued plans to ensure the accommodation needs of college students. The province is encouraging universities to augment their dormitory facilities by purchasing or leasing residential properties in the vicinity of their campuses.
Nationwide researches show that dormitories accommodating for four or six students are the most common, yet a considerable number of students can still be found living in dorms designed for eight.
