Scene 1 第一幕

Monica: Are you through with that?
Joey: Yeah, I'm sorry the swallowing slowed me down.
Monica: Whose little ball of paper is this?
Chandler: Oh that would be mine. See...um...I wrote a note to myself, and then I realize I didn't need it. So I balled it up, and now I wish I was dead.
Pheobe: She already fluffed that pillow...Monica, you know you already fluffed that pillow...but it's fine.
Monica: Look, I'm sorry guys, I just don't wanna give them any more ammunition than they already have.
Chandler: Yes, we all know that how cruel the parents can get about the flatness of a child's pillow.
Joey: Would you relax? You do this every time they come. This place looks great. You've got a beautiful lasagna that looks good enough to...avoid touching.
Phoebe: Monica, hi! Monica, um...you're scaring me. I mean you are like, you are like all chaotic and twirly, you know? Not, not in a good way.

Somthing about Scene 1

1. Monica and Ross' parents are coming to visit, and apparently, the parents aren't quite happy about everything Monica does...so she is working so hard to just make them shut up.

2. be through with something means be finished with something, done with something. I am through with dinner, means I finished my dinner, sometimes you can even use it to be through with someone..for example, a conversation like this:

A: Hey, isn't she your ex-girlfriend?
B: yeah, but I am totally through with her.
A: I am glad that you got over with it.

Through here means that you have no feelings for the person,. So when B says that he is through with his ex-girlfriend, he actually means he has no romantic feelings for her, and he feels alright now about the break up.

3. What is ammunition? When we check the dictionary, it actually means things like cannon balls or bullets, basically things people use to attack in a war...It is actually another analogy Monica uses. We know that her parents are very critical about her, so every word or comment they say to Monica, she considers it as ammunition they use to attack her. And that is the exact reason why she is working so hard to clean the apartment to avoid more critical comments from her parents.

4. When Phoebe wants to draw Monica's attention, she says "Monica, HI" "Hi" here isn't a greeting, but a way to get attention, Hi, hello, hey are the words you can use.

第二幕

Scene 2 第二幕

Barry: Ah. Sorry about that. So...what you've been up to?
Rachel: Oh..not much...Oh....I...ah...got a job.
Barry: That's great.
Rachel: Why why are you so tan?
Barry: Oh...I...ah...went to Aruba.
Rachel: Oh no...You went on our honeymoon alone?
Barry: No...I went with..ah...now this may hurt.
Boy: Me...?
Barry: No. I went with Mindy.
Rachel: Mindy? My maid of honor Mindy?
Barry: Yeah...we're kind of a thing now.
Rachel: Well...I'm...You've got Plugs!
Barry: Careful...they haven't quite taken yet.
Rachel: And you've got lenses. But you hate sticking your finger into your eye.
Barry: Well, not for her. Listen...I...really wanted to thank you.
Rachel: Okay...
Barry: See...abot a month ago I wanted to hurt you more than I've ever wanted to hurt anyone in my life. And I'm an orthodontist. You know, you were right. I thought we were happy. But we weren't happy. But with Mindy...now I'm happy. Spit.
Rachel: What?
Boy: Me.
Rachel: Anyway...um...I guess this belongs to you or hey maybe someday Mindy.
Barry: Like she would be settled for that.
Rachel: Oh...yeah...that's true. But I think it's a nice ring. And thank you for giving it to me.
Barry: Thank you for giving it back.

Somthing about Scene 2

1. This is a very interesting conversation between Rachel and her would-be-husband. Rachel goes to Barrys' clinic and gives back the wedding ring Barry gave her. So usually a conversation between two people who are close, can start with the cliché, "How are you?" "how have you been" or even "what's up?" here we have "what you have been up to." meaning "so, what have you been doing lately". You can answer this question in any way you please. Like "oh, nothing special", or basically what you have been doing in recent days.

2. Now the word "tan". This is something we Chinese might not understand, we believe that fair skin, or light complexion is good looking, in America, people believe being tan, or out in the sun for he natural tan color is the most good looking, sexy and healthy. Anyway, so the question is, why is Barry so tan, if he is going to his clinic all day. And now Barry tells Rachel the truth. That he went to Aruba with Rachel's maid of honor. He knew what he was about to tell her may hurt Rachel's feeling, so he said as a warning before he tells her: "now this may hurt." Remember Barry has this little patient in his clinic? The boy was so scared that something hurt that Barry's gonna do to him. So he asked: "me?"

3. Maid of Honor. Usually in a traditional western wedding: a bride has more than one maid, or matron (if the girl is married), but there is only one maid of honor or matron of honor. This person is usually the closest to the bride. She can be birde's best friend, sister, cousin...you name them.

4. a thing: this is a typical American slang. "we are kind of a thing" means that "we are seeing each other, or we are boyfriend and girlfriend", in other words, we are together on a romantic term.

5. orthodontist. When we were young and when we have uneven not-so-good-looking teeth…we go to them…that’s right, they are the ones who put on braces on your teeth and make your teeth prettier afterwards.(joke)

6. When Rachel gives Barry the ring, she tells him that maybe Mindy, the one Barry is going out with may need it someday for marrying Barry. And Barry says, "Like she would be settled for that." He means, this little diamond ring may not be enough for her, this is a very impolite way to say this to Rachel's face, by implying that Mindy deserves a better ring...so I mean look at Rachel's reaction.
