The number of UK jobs increased in the three months to June by the most since the start of the pandemic as the reopening of the economy boosted demand for workers and created early signs of labour shortages.

Those in employment rose to 32.28m in the second quarter, up 95,000 from the previous three months, the Office for National Statistics said on Tuesday.

This was a greater increase than the 75,000 forecast by economists polled by Reuters and marked the strongest growth since the three months to February 2020, before the first Covid-19 restrictions were imposed. The rise in hiring pushed the headline unemployment rate down to 4.7 per cent.

“The world of work continues to rebound robustly from the effects of the pandemic,” said Jonathan Athow, ONS deputy national statistician for economic statistics.

The number of payroll employees shows that the improvement continued into July, with a 182,000 monthly rise to 28.9m, but still 200,000 per cent below its pre-pandemic level. The figure suggests a limited impact of July’s spike in Covid-19 infections on the labour market recovery.

Athow noted that the number of people on payroll had grown by more than 500,000 in the past three months, regaining about four-fifths of the fall seen at the start of the pandemic.

With many workers returning from furlough as businesses reopened, the number of hours worked surpassed 1bn a week for the first time since the onset of the pandemic.

Job vacancies rose 21 per cent above pre-pandemic levels and the median monthly pay increased 6.4 per cent in July compared with February 2020, suggesting rising labour shortages and growing inflationary pressure ahead of the end of the planned end of the furlough scheme in September.
