The United Nations special envoy for the Horn of Africa has told the security council that Monday's military takeover was a tragic event for Sudan. She said the restoration of constitutional order in Sudan was critically urgent. The African Unions says it's suspended Sudan until power is handed back to civilians.

Ethiopian federal troops and Tigrayan forces have clashed in the Amhara region, where thousands of people have been displaced over the past months. Both sides have claimed victory in fighting near the strategic city of Dessie.

The International Labor Organization says the world’s economy is not recovering as hoped from the Covid-19 pandemic. It said the coronavirus pandemic had cost the equivalent of 125 million full-time jobs.

A leading human rights group in Russia has said the number of people deemed to be political prisoners has risen sharply this year. The group Memorial has listed 420 people, up nearly 60 from last year.

Police in Brazil have uncovered a criminal operation to remove almost a metric ton of gold each year from protected indigenous lands in the Amazon. The gold was being extracted from that Kayapó territory in Pará state by wildcat miners who then sold it on intermediaries.

Police investigating the accidental shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins by the actor Alec Baldwin say they recovered the suspected life round believed to have killed her from the shoulder of an injured director. The Santa Fe district attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies says they are not ruling out charges at this stage.

The Swiss based International Football Association board has recommended that five substitutions are implemented permanently in the sport. The option of using five replacement players was brought in last year to help ease the strains imposed on players by the coronavirus pandemic.
