Halloween

Hollaween is on October 31. It's a day of tricks and treats. People dress as ghosts, witches, monsters, movie stars etc. Children go from door to door shouting "Trick of treat!" or "Shell out!" People give them candies, chips, apples and other snacks called "treats."

Often children and adults clean out a pumpkin, carve a face on it and light a candle inside. Then they put this "Jack-o-lantern" in their window.

At that day I made up my daughter to be a princess. About 7 p.m. we started to go to our neighbourhood to ask for candies. Since it was my daughter's first time, she was excited about it. When she knocked the first door, a nice woman dressed witch's costume appeared. She gave my daughter some candies and appreciated her costume. My daughter was much happier. Then she knocked another door. Every time she got some candies. In the end she had a bag of candies. How happy she was! She said she would ask for candies next year.

Additional information about the Halloween customs:

The Halloween costoms today had their beginnings with Samhain, the ancient Celtic harvest festival that honoured the lord of the dead. Two thousand years ago the Celtic people of Britain and Northern Europe told myths to explain the death of plants and flowers and the arrival of winter. They believed that the god of darkness held the sun prisoner for six months each year. While this god of light was captive, the spirits of the dead came to life and wandered outdoors. To protect themselves from the spirits, people burned bonfires and lit candles on October 31 each year. They wore disguises so that the spirits wouldn't recognize them and left offerings of food and drink on their doorsteps.

Early Chiristians gave the Celtic customs new names and meanings. This often resulted in the blending of traditions and beliefs. In 837, November 1 became All Saints' Day and October 31 All Hallow's Eve, which means Holy Evening. This name was shortened to Halloween. November 2 became All Souls' Day. On this day people remember those who have died. The bonfires were now used to protect people from the devil, the enemy of the Christian God. People in many countried remember their dead by visiting cemeteries, saying prayers and leaving flowers.

In the 1840s, Irish settlers brought their Halloween customs to North America. The Jack-o-lantern comes from an old Irish myth of a man named Stingy Jack. He wandered the earth as a spirit because he had played a trick on the devil. Jack couldn't get into Hell and he was too greedy to get into Heaven. The devil threw Jack a burning coal that he stuck into a turnip. He uses it as a lantern to light his path as he searchs for a final resting place.

On October 31, in nearly every town and city in Canada, Halloween is a time for putting on costumes and parting. Many people decorate their houses with skeletons, cobwebs and spooky light.
